The Kindness of Neighbours

I realise I may be a cockeyed optimist but I am finding good things which have come as a result of this pandemic.   For me one of the best things has been increased opportunities to talk to my neighbours.  Our little close, was always friendly, but neighbourliness has increased many-fold this last year.

A couple of nights ago I was out watering my back garden when I heard the neighbour behind me doing the same thing so I asked if he could use a few spring onions.  He assured me that he could always use a few spring onions and asked if I could use three kitchen chairs.  It seemed like a very good swap from my point of view!  I accepted and he brought them around for me and they are now in my back garden.  At the moment they are around my cast iron table but I have heard a whisper that a new wooden table may be on the way.  (Yet more kindness!  You'll hear more about that in due course.  )

I wanted some new wooden chairs to go with the table but can't really afford exactly what I want so these will be in use for at least a couple of years.  How's that for the kindness of neighbours?!

  1. That is quite a trade to your advantage. I'm looking forward to getting outdoor seating but must wait for deck to be redone and barn to be renovated so come winter we have a place to put outdoor stuff out of the winter elements. Making do in the meantime. Can't wait to see what table coming your way.

  2. The kindness of neighbors, I like that. Recently I gave a neighbor I have never met some DVDs and she left a beautiful bouquet on my front patio chair. I offered the DVDs on an online neighborhood group. You will have many fun times having friends over for tea on your patio now.

  3. You are right, I think that in many cases the pandemic brought out the best in most people.

    Love those chairs. Great trade.

    God bless.

    1. Not often you offer spring onions and get chairs! I have lovely neighbours.

  4. An excellent exchange! Jack will be itching to get some protective paint on them so they don't get damaged by the rain. Your post has set me off thinking what I could offer on our local 'page'; goodness knows I have so much 'stuff' that needs re-homing in my attempt to de-clutter. Must have a rummage in the spare bedroom later!

  5. It feels good to be using something which might have been tipped, rather than just buying something. My neighbour had tried all sorts of places but never thought of asking me!

  6. Excellent chairs. Wish we had some more "upright" ones. We were commenting just yesterday the folding canvas ones that come with the big garden table are too laid back to be comfortable for eating outside with a knife and fork!

    1. Yes, I have to admit that until I was given these I'd never thought about kitchen chairs outside but they may be better than many chairs made for outdoor use.

  7. What an great exchange Mary. So good that this pandemic has brought communities together again. There has been so many acts of kindness and generosity here too. The chairs are a delight.
