Looking back at October

Some of my birthday flowers
Well, we are all going to have to adjust back into lockdown.  To be honest I didn't really come out of isolation very much.  I had two days out (Clumber Park and Gunby Hall) and a visit to Brigg, and I visited a couple of cousins but I have maintained my seclusion.  Jack has been, but not into the house.

But October was good.  The big event for me was my birthday.  Truth to tell I had expected a non-event but the event was suitably marked.  I had lots of flowers, always one of my favourite gifts.  I cooked a very special meal and indulged myself.

When Jack comes my quality of life rockets!  He has been doing all sorts of jobs and here is some of the evidence.  My flower borders and vegetable patch are all ready for the winter.

And when I have my lunch today I will have lovely fresh vegetables.  Thanks to you, Jack, I can have birthdays all the year around!

  2. Sounds like you had a lovely birthday! And it looks like Jack has been busy. I am sorry about the lockdown. We haven’t really come out of it personally either and, as a state, we need to go back because the cases are soaring. However, the powers that be think it is over and a lot of people are living life as though nothing were going on. It scares me so in I will stay. I am glad you had a good birthday.

    1. Yes, I feel safe in my own little bungalow and a happier staying here. Jack has been a very good boy, hasn't he!

  3. Jack has done a bang up job on your garden. Happy belated birthday...or did I already wish you one. I think my mind is going.

Sorry that you are going back into lockdown. I have been doing a great deal of reading and it seems like the virus is on the rise everywhere once again.

    God bless.

    1. It's lovely to go outside and fetch really fresh vegetables. Jack looks after me very well. I'm usually in disgrace for one reason or another but I think he likes me - really!

  4. Happy belated birthday! Your flowers are gorgeous and Jack has done a wonderful job.
Sorry you are all going back into lockdown. Where I live 3 regions (including mine) are back in modified closures - no indoor dining, gyms, entertainment venues - that sort of thing (not that I was doing any of that anyway). This country is so big that we do things province by province - and then region by region within the province. For us it makes the most sense and people just adjust. November has arrived, cold, grey & windy so I'll be staying indoors. Yesterday was cold but beautiful blue skies so the one friend that I have a bit of a bubble with and I drove north to visit an antique market and then eventually about 2 hours north to Lake Simcoe. This region is in the same restrictions as the city so we take food with us and just pick up coffee at a drive through and then eat in the car or at a picnic table along the way. Even in the car we wear masks and keep the windows open. The only problem is once again the lack of public bathrooms! We stopped at a gas station where the notice on the door said the the bathroom was closed but they were actually allowing people to use it (as we understand it places like this for travellers should have bathrooms available)! It is a bit confusing so does take a bit of planning! We just keep to ourselves and walk - it is the preferred method of socializing here. Patios are open but you can't sit for long because it's barely above freezing - many now carry blankets or throws in the car for wrapping up in if we do risk it. It's challenging :-)
I hope that you and Jack stay safe and well.

    1. We have a three tier system but we've had to go back into national lockdown from Thursday. I was (and currently am) in a medium risk area where many things are allowed to open but ten miles up the road is a high risk area and twenty five miles away is a very high risk area.

  5. Good to hear that you prepared well for your birthday and had a good day. I'm thinking along the same lines for Christmas. I intend to drive over to take cards and presents for my youngest son and the grandchildren, see them at a distance, then come home for a cosy day in. Normally, I would stay and watch the children open their presents, drink tea, eat the traditional bacon butty, etc. But it isn't going to be 'normal' this year, is it? I shall indulge myself with some tasty treats - Christmas cake (just a small one) and Christmas pudding(s) 'cos I'm the only one in the family who loves these things; a nice dinner, a good film (or two) on Netflix and a couple of glasses of red wine. Hopefully there will be phone calls from 2 sons who live far away, if the weather permits, Benji and I will go for a walk - and I shall go to bed whenever I feel like it.

    1. Would you be able to have a video call or zoom or whatever to watch pressie opening? Like you I'm planning treats for Christmas Day. I always spend it alone once I have been to church but even church looks iffy this year.

  7. Happy belated birthday. Nice to hear that when Jack comes your quality of life rockets, especially your gardens. I am aiming to put in some winter veggies soon; my tomatoes are still producing so I am waiting a bit.
