Yesterday afternoon was
distinctly brumal and I had to add an extra layer of clothing. Autumn is definitely arriving after the long,
hot (and dry) summer of 2025. It’s right
back-end now.
Leaves are definitely
turning. The horse chestnuts have been
on the turn since mid-August but other trees are beginning to go brown
now. The world is becoming aureate and
the chiaroscuro is wonderful in the early morning.
Aureate – golden-coloured.
Back-end – a Lincolnshire dialect word for autumn, meaning the “back end” of the year
Brumal – wintry, but often
used to describe the creeping chill of autumn.
Chiaroscuro – interplay of light and shadow
Winter pjs, socks, and this morning I'm wearing a wooly pully! The morning light is accentuating the golden colours.

DeleteChiaroscuro is a new word to me - and this morning the early morning sun and wind in the trees really were making lots of shadows.

DeleteI'll have to remember the word brumal. Hasn't been like that here except for a few mornings last week.
ReplyDeleteI think brumal and back end are the most useful from that list. Back end is in common use around here anyway.

It's not unpleasant here but I am needing an extra layer early morning and in the evenings.
DeleteThank you for teaching me all those news words and phrases. It's not brumal yet, over here. In fact, quite the opposite as it was 86F/31C today (Monday) and is supposed to go up to 93F/34C tomorrow (Tuesday). But, there is some rain in the forecast for Thursday, which will be very welcome.
