| My Kia Niro aka The Empress |
My first
problem was the handbrake – it’s just a button to press! I drove an automatic around thirty years ago
but this is so different!
I had my old
car nearly nine years and we had come to an understanding with each other. For years, I knew exactly where everything
was. Now I can't tell whether I'm indicating or washing the windscreen. There
is something deeply undignified about spraying water everywhere when all you
wanted to do was turn a corner.
And the wretched
thing keeps beeping at me! Am I too
close to something? Have I crossed an invisible boundary? Is it trying to
tell me I've forgotten my handbag?
Still, I'm
making progress. Each journey brings a little more confidence, and I'm
beginning to recognise which buttons matter and which can safely be ignored. I’m taking things slowly, sticking to
familiar routes and resisting the temptation to press buttons simply to see
what happens.
Give it time.
Before long, it will feel like an old friend. I'll know where everything is and
the strange noises will become familiar.
Give me time.

I've also had a new to me Mini Clubman Cooper which is a lovely car to drive, but like you I press something for one thing and get something totally different. I've mastered the start/stop and handbrake buttons, but still reach towards the dashboard to turn the key on or off. Xx
ReplyDeleteI had to check the handbook to find out how to open the patrol tank!
DeleteThe beeping when you o retake a stationary car and the tug to the left scared me witless at the beginning. I now really like my little hybrid Honda and will possibly buy one again in the near future as I don’t want an electric car. My licence has just been renewed this year and I can’t make up my mind if it’s time to change as the car needed new tyres to get through its MOT in September. Catriona
ReplyDeleteThis is my first hybrid and the first automatic which I have owned (although I have driven automatics belonging to other people). I haven't tried overtaking much yet!
DeleteOh me oh my! And the alert noise it makes if it thinks you are wandering over yhe white line??? I've given up driving now (I don't feel enough in control of my oxygen levels to drive) but yes, it was 'interesting ' learning our new car!
ReplyDeleteIt seems very opinionated.
DeleteGood name for your car. I still hear beeps but don't know why and we've had the car three years.
ReplyDeleteOh dear! Well, at least I know I'm not alone.
DeleteA new car is always a bit of a learning curve, isn't it? I'm sure you'll get the hang of it in no time at all. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, but I have my doubts.
DeleteWe got a new car a couple of years ago, and it came with all those so-called "driver assistance" features. Including speed limit recognition - we have a railway bridge near where we live, on a 30mph section of road. From one direction the car insists that the speed limit is 19mph(!) and from the opposite direction it is 20mph!
ReplyDeleteOh for the simplicity of the Triumph Herald car that I learned to drive in.....
I think such simplicity has gone for ever!
