Carol singers

When I was a child carol singers were around every night after about 12th December. It would be groups of about four children who would sing two or three carols, always ending with "We wish you a merry Christmas" and ringing the doorbell in the hope that they would get a few coppers.

There was also the carol singing with the school choir when fifty or sixty of us would sing unaccompanied but with great harmonies, and we would get rather larger donations for a local children's home.

I feel a bit sad that the only "carol singing" that I have heard this year was our local Lions who come around with Santa on a "sleigh" and very loud recorded music.

I would hate to see the groups of three or four children going around without adults these days, but somehow I feel sad that the old tradition of carol singing has disappeared.   Is it the same where you live?

(Sorry, distinctly unwell so finding it hard to create a post.)

  1. Hope you soon feel stronger. We enjoyed the people caroling along the High street when we lived in England. Here in the U.S. groups used to sing to shut ins or older parishioners, but it’s difficult to get people out to sing together. I agree, it’s sad.

  2. I used to take my Youth Group out caroling every Christmas. People loved it and since many of them were so much taller than me I could hide in their midst.

    God bless.

  3. I LOVED carol singing as a child! We used to go with the church choir and then we went with the church youth club but not done it since! I sang in a concert organised by my A'level music teacher and he still goes carol singing with a small group of friends in East London every year! I was envious!x

  4. Hope you are feeling better, now.
No carol singing over here, but, one year, back when I used to take singing lessons, a group of us went around the stores in the mini mall where the singing studio was located and we sang carols. That was a lot of fun.
