I retired (again!) on 4th June. Today I started working again. Today I went to Claxby to preach and celebrate Holy Communion. As you can see it's a pretty little church at one of the highest points on the Lincolnshire Wolds. (Which never get very high.) I'd taken a funeral service in a snow storm there many years ago (the only time that I have worn wellies to conduct worship) but apart from that it was a new church to me.
And I was made so welcome! It would be easy to think that of course they're grateful - if I didn't go they couldn't have a communion service! But it goes further than that. These lovely people were sorry that their much-loved Rector has retired but they are enjoying seeing new faces, hearing new "takes" on the gospel and most of all knowing that no matter what changes they may see (or hear) God's love will always be constant and he has them in mind.
And I was reminded too that although specifics may change, God will always have plans for me too.
How I agree with the Claxby parishioners, it is refreshing to have some one different presiding and preaching, it is on no disrespect to the incumbent either if he or she has a rare Sunday off.
ReplyDeleteAt the previous church we attended cover was provided occasionally by a NSM who taught at a top London school, his sermons were explanations and history of the Gospels.
When we go on holiday we try to attend the local church, not only an unusual perspective but often a different take on Common Worship, we wonder whether it will be Prayer E or maybe A. In Yorkshire many years ago it was assumed we had moved into the village, we were asked on which side of the main road we lived for apparently it was a village of two halves, they saw DH joining the PCC and me on the flower rota.
They gave me a surprise - it was Order 2 so I felt as if I were flying by the seat of my pants as I've never done that before!. Welcome to my blog.
DeleteGod bless you in this new role - and I am sure you will be a blessing to others x
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteWe have been attending Church of Scotland services which is very different to what we had been used to, but it is refreshing to meet new people and learn a different way of doing things. Refreshing as it must be for you and your new parishioners.
ReplyDeleteThe Claxby people are blessed to have you. I so enjoy your way of leading worship services and your teaching time.
