Finding lovely new words has been one of the joys of this winter. I wouldn't have the time (or maybe even the inclination) to relish words in the summer. And Stephanie Fitzgerald's book "The Gifts of winter" has introduced me to another word, trygghet.
Trygghet is a Swedish word and it's about a feeling of safety and security, especially when the weather outside is "challenging". Coming in from weather like that it's lovely to give a deep sigh and relax. Yesterday was a miserable rainy day here and I was so glad to shut the front door and settle in front of my (electric with flame effect) fire.

ReplyDeleteBlogger's latest trick is to stop me replying to comments on my own blog! I have to create a new comment instead. Elizabethd, Personally as I aam only talking to myself I say "trigget" knowing I am wrong. I found this on the web. " 'Trygghet' (Swedish/Norwegian for safety/security) is pronounced roughly as TRYG-het or TRÜG-het. The "y" sounds like a short, rounded German 'ü' or a tight 'ee' sound, followed by a hard 'g', a soft 'h', and a quick 'et' ending. The stress is on the first syllable. " Good luck with that one!

DeleteI love that little fire. I'm 'fire-watching' at the moment as we would like to replace our gas fire, a nice design but 40 years old and not used for 20 or so, and gas fires are a no-no with oxygen users.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the look of "plastic" coals when the fire is off so I chose a stove so I can't see inside it when it's off. And I think I made a good choice.
