S is for sprouts - of course!

The love/hate vegetable to end all love/hate vegetables.

Sprouts aren't among my favourites but Christmas dinner wouldn't be the same without them.  When I was a little girl they were straight from the garden: these days they are Christmas loss-leaders in every supermarket.  I was going to order just six loose sprouts but that would cost more than a 500g net so I've ordered the net and found a recipe for sprout soup.

The posh chaps are huddled around a campfire doing a meal plan for their travels.  They sorted a route (sort of) but none of them is much good at map reading so they might just follow a star.  They've decided to include sprouts as the camels quite like them as an occasional treat.  They wanted chocolate but I'm not letting them have any.  I remove the chocolate from the cupboard each morning and dispose of it Carefully.  That's my job as a responsible adult.

Sorry this is so late in the day.  I've had problems with uploading photographs.

  1. We love Brussels sprouts and I always steam them. Then I might toss in oil and stir fry/air fry/chop up with butter and a little cream. Another favourite is bubble and squeak so I always make too many and too much mash so that we can have b and s the next day. I remember as a child being sent to pick some from the garden when they were frozen and so were my fingers. Catriona

    1. Oh yes. Bubble and squeak is essential on Boxing Day.

  2. Yesterday I asked a family [four children aged 5 - 16] what their favourite Christmas food was. Without hesitation the youngest declared "Brussels sprouts cooked with bacon bits!" This gives us all hope. Check out Jamie Oliver's sprout Caesarsalad - with sprouts done two ways. Looks good! https://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/vegetables/brussels-sprouts-caesar-style/

  3. I soften some chopped in onion in butter and add the sprouts sliced finely. Once it's all stirred up in goes salt and pepper and a little hot water to braise everything over a high heat until the sprouts are just cooked. What's left over becomes bubble and squeak.
I loathed sprouts as a child. Dreadful grey waterery soggy things.
Glad you are being a responsible adult with the chocolate.

    1. How could I be anything other than a responsible adult when it comes to posh gentlemen and chocolate!

  4. To get our boys to eat them when they were younger sprouts were called baby cabbages. Worked and now they enjoy them as much as Harvey and I do. We actually like them roasted a great deal more than boiled.

    God bless.

  6. My daughter loves sprouts and I am not that keen on them (but, I will eat them being the responsible adult that I am!) They tend to be quite expensive, over here, currently priced $3.50/lb. (= 2.62 British pounds at today's exchange rates) at the supermarket.

    1. They are a loss leader veg here at Christmas and this week only they can be as low as 8p per pound. New Year they'll be back up there.

    2. I've just been to Lidl and sprouts are 5p per pound! I can't remember them ever being so cheap (other than free on Christmas Eve late afternoon).
