Back to Eden 1

There are some welcomes that you remember for ever and the welcome I had at Eden Project a few days ago was truly memorable!

The welcome from the humans was good - but the welcome from the birds was great.  I decided to have a late breakfast of coffee and Danish in the terrace restaurant in the Mediterranean biome and I soon had several twittering friends demanding their share.

The cheekiest of course was the robin.  He came right up to the plate.

The blackbirds weren't far behind.  The females especially were very determined to get their share and they saw off several other feathered diners.

Shyest of my table companions were the finches.  For a long time they sat on nearby chairs and watched the shemozzle at the table but when the others weren't looking they too came and shared my Danish pastry.

The waitress told me that the birds had been born in the biome and never left it.  I felt that I was the guest, invited to the birds' table but that it was a bring-and-share meal.

I have to confess I had a second Danish - but only because I wanted to share it with the birds.  Honest

  1. I believe you ;) I have also enjoyed the birds company whilst eating a (calorie-free) cake and a cuppa in the Mediterranean Biome. Also on my one visit to Tresco Gardens; their cafe also has lots of almost hand-tame birds. Meanwhile, my bird table at home is inundated with sparrows - lots of them, who live in my hedge - starlings and pigeons, who cost me a fortune in fat balls, seed and treats.

  3. As at Trelissick, also complete with wasps sharing your meals! What a pleasure it was to wander around the garden with you.

  4. What a lovely post!

Maybe you already know this but I've just learned that your robin is very different from ours. How odd! Of course then I looked it up and they are two completely different birds.

    1. I mentioned robins once before in a post and realised from the comments that there are two different robins but I've now looked it up as well. Yours is much larger than ours. The robin is an unofficial national bird here. It's probably our friendliest garden bird and every gardener gets use to a robin hanging around when s/he is digging as they love the worms and grubs that get turned up.

    2. Guess what Michigan's official State bird is? Yep, an American Robin. Before this post I never knew there was a different bird with the same name. And my mom is named Robin too :) Robin's are one of the most commonly seen birds around these parts, well the American Robin. I can't say I've ever seen yours. I wonder now if they are here, I will have to go googling again.

  6. I showed this to my birdwatcher husband who loved the photos. He has a sweet tooth, but I think he would forgo a cake himself and buy simply for the birds to eat!
