Lavender's blue

Lavender's blue, dilly dilly, lavender's green.
When I am King, dilly dilly, you shall be Queen.
I love to dance, dilly dilly, I love to sing.
When I am Queen, dilly, dilly, you'll be my King.

That's one of the songs of my childhood although it's actually a seventeenth century song and even I'm not that old!

Lavender and the shadow of me!
And maybe it's one of the reasons I love lavender.  Soon after I moved into this house I saw an advert for some free lavender plugs (but with a hefty P&P charge) and I sent for some.  They seemed to take for ever to get going but this year they are perfect.  There are several varieties but don't ask me which!  I planted them in my front garden so everyone going past can enjoy them and even more important the bees and butterflies can enjoy them and I can see them from where I sit watching the world go by.
Simple beauty

Today I collected a small bunch for the house.  They are destined for my bedside as lavender is supposed to aid sleep.

I hope you enjoy my lavender too.

  1. I can't imagine a garden without lavenders of all varieties. I'm just about to start cutting mine to dry for pot pourri...but the bees are loving it so I may have to wait. Like you, I bought tiny plugs from the Telegraph free except for postage, and when they arrived they looked like tiny paintbrushes. They did well and are now three years later, strong plants.

  3. I love lavender and have tried numerous times to grow it here, but apparently this is where lavender comes to die. Yours is gorgeous.

    1. I've discovered that lavender doesn't like to get its feet wet! The plants I have shown are all in a very dry area of my garden but the ones in damper ground just died and have been taken out.

  4. I also love the smell and colour of lavender. I had lavender in my garden once. but my soil is heavy clay and gets ever so soggy during winter that the lavender died on me one day. Lavender does aid sleep and it`s a good essential oil to use for healing skin problems, too.

    1. Could you grow it in pots? That would keep its feet dry!
